Natural Foot Bath at Hell Valley
Natural Foot Bath at Hell Valley

Most people that travel to Noboribetsu Onsen will find themselves taking a beautiful hike through Hell Valley – a breathtaking display of hot steam vents, sulfurous streams, and volcanic activity fully deserving of the name Hell Valley.

At night, you might even consider taking a night hike but don’t worry, we won’t judge you if the roars of the valley echoing through the darkness make you reconsider.

But what most people taking a hike probably don’t know is that about 20 minutes into the hike, rests the Oyunuma Lake – a crater lake created by active volcanic eruptions. Oyunuma has a surface temperature of about 50 degrees Celsius with smaller ponds nearby that are even hotter.

If you’re worried, about getting burned by accident, don’t be – there are plenty of warning signs along the way.

Foot bath Hell ValleyFlowing out of Oyunuma Lake however is a river called Oyunumagawa which runs for hundreds of meters. If you follow along the path long enough, which is highly recommended, you will get to enjoy a relaxing natural foot bath from the same water mentioned earlier but this time at much more reasonable temperatures.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy dipping your (by now) tired feet into the nice steamy river while looking at the beautiful nature that surrounds you! You might want to even pack lunch.
